This is a birthday present for my sister: , who requested "ninja turtles or waterbenders" . I'm a big TMNT fan, but I haven't drawn them for years, so the choice was obvious XD.
It's an older-looking Katara using Hula to bend the water . Her stance is based loosely on the Hula pose called "ike" which looks like this [link]
One thing I would have loved to see in Avatar was a group of waterbenders based around Polynesian culture. It would fit really well :]. The concept for this picture is something I wanted to do for a while.
Haha, anyway, Happy B-day, sis!

Gah--oh my gosh, this is so gorgeous. I agree, a pacific-islander type water tribe would have been really cool, but who knows, maybe there's some out there, they just haven't made contact with the outside world in a while . Rather like the Foggy Swamp tribe.
Amazing--so this is going in my favs of course ! Your art looks a LOT like something we could've seen on the show, and really seems to capture the spirit of the character!

Hehe, maybe we'll get to see more bending cultures in the new series :]

Fairy tales do not tell children that Dragons exist.
Children already know that Dragons exist!
i thought the same thing. i love avatar, by far my favorite show. but it would have been so cool with Polynesian benders and warriors.
