Waterbending - Hula by Blue-Ten Waterbending - Hula by Blue-Ten
3/10/2011 Edit: Made a bunch of changes to this one. Added more contrast to the colors, fixed Katara's facial features a bit and adjusted the image to be poster-sized. You can see the old version here.

This is a birthday present for my sister: :iconlovely-whimsy:, who requested "ninja turtles or waterbenders" :B. I'm a big TMNT fan, but I haven't drawn them for years, so the choice was obvious XD.

It's an older-looking Katara using Hula to bend the water :D. Her stance is based loosely on the Hula pose called "ike" which looks like this [link]

One thing I would have loved to see in Avatar was a group of waterbenders based around Polynesian culture. It would fit really well :]. The concept for this picture is something I wanted to do for a while.

Haha, anyway, Happy B-day, sis!

Nice water effects! Though I can't help hearing the HAWAII 5-O theme music while looking at this (Not exactly something works well with the A:TLA world, I admit).

This is absolutely lovely- I've never seen anyone mix the Polynesian cultural influence with katara, and I must say it is extremely pleasing :D!

And you're absolutely right. I wonder that Bryke didn't think to do it. Or perhaps with all the penguin sledding and giant koi fish riding, they figured it would be too much to fit in Avatar-verse Polynesia xD

I think this image is spectacular. I was wondering if there was any way that I could use it as a poster in a booth at an upcoming hula festival in Hawaii. There will be several hundred Japanese dancers performing. This is a wonderful blending of hula and Hawaii. Please let me know if it is possible to use the image. Contact info: bbg@hawaii.rr.com

Like the pose and the Waterbending idea. It'd be awesome if it was an integration of Water and Earthbending because Hawaii is not just water alone but fire and earth from Kilauea.

Only thing I don't like is that Katara was such a Mary-Sue in the series. Seriously? All three? Water bending for fighting, healing, and bloodbending? That and always winning arguments and getting her way, even though she stole the Waterbending Scroll and went through Toph's things to find the wanted poster for the Runaway? And she ends up with the main character? At the beginning of the series, I kind of liked her but as she became more nagging and demanding, I lost all interest and became a Toph fan.

But hey, that's just my opinion of the series! Nothing to do with the artwork! The artwork's great!
Wonder what would happen of Toph did some Earthbending with the magma? Just an idea. ^^

Thanks very much!

Hehe, actually I kind of agree with you. I noticed there was something different about her character after Book 1, but mostly in Book 3, and it always bothered me. I never thought about it the way you did, but it makes a lot of sense now that you mention it XD.

Oh, that sounds like a cool idea :D

You're very welcome!

Yeah. I've just kind of had it with Katara. She always assumes she's in the right. She always thinks she's pretty innocent, sweet, and kind when she herself has committed wrongdoings. I forgot to mention the incident with the Painted Lady. Even though she dressed up like a spirit, the village forgave her. Even the spirit thanked her?! If someone dressed up like me to perform miracles, I would've been a little upset. Also, almost all the guys she's around are "attached" or "attracted" to her somehow. Just completely annoying. Again, this is the character, not the artwork! The artwork is beautiful!

Oh yeah! And because you're incorporating Polynesian culture, might I suggest Toph Earthbending with magma with her version of hula dressed like Pele, the Hawaiian goddess of fire, while Katara Waterbends with the ocean water with her hula like Namaka, the Hawaiian sea goddess?

It's so pretty! You know, I'm working on a fan fic right now and currently writing the 4th chapter... It was unbelievable to come across this drawing, cuz I'm just at the point where they actually discover a small tribe of Waterbenders in an island a bit northern than Kyoshi island! (Thought of the residents more like Hawaiians, but I should totally research Indonesian cultures some and see if I can come up with something! Have so many ideas about it! Dang it's gonna be a loooong chapter! Again, great drawing!

Haha, that sounds really cool! I've always thought that Waterbenders in a Polynesian setting would fit really well :]. Good luck with your research =D
