Everblue will be at Kumoricon 2013 in Vancouver, WA this weekend! I'll have chapters 1-3 available as usual and I'll probably be doing inked sketches for people as well :3. I also got a poster version of the Chapter 4 cover printed that I'm really happy with, hehe *__*. I don't know my table number yet, but I'll update with that once they let me know. Here's a map showing where the Artist Alley is located:

I hope to see you there if you're attending :D

It's about time I updated this dusty old journal XD.

Just wanted to let people know that I redesigned the Everblue site, switching it from Comicpress to ComicCMS. It should be faster and prettier with neat little extras :3. Have a look if you're interested!

Now that I've got almost everything squared away, I can post this XD. I'm gonna be at Otakon, Artist Alley table X07 next to Amya Chronicles and around the corner from Toilet Genie. This time I'll have all three chapters of Everblue for sale as well as some new prints :]. I hope you can stop by if you're attending! :D

Some advice for potential exhibitors and my future self: always make sure to get everything done as early as possible, you'll end up doing yourself and your blood pressure a big favor XD.

Waiting at the airport to head on up to Seattle later today and get everything set up for Sakuracon :). I'll be at small press booth 20 with comics and posters and things :B. blix-it and Nadda of Toilet Genie and Amya Chonicles, respectively, will be at booth 239 as well. Feel free to stop by if you're going :D. Hope to see anyone there!

Question About Conventions

Wed Sep 21, 2011, 8:37 PM

I'm trying to plan ahead (way ahead) for getting a table at potential conventions (anime or comic book), but I'm having a hard time finding information on any over here on the West Coast. I really only know of three near my state off the top of my head XD. Does anyone know a good site that lists these kinds of conventions by region? Or, better yet, do you know of any cons on the West Coast of the US? Any help at all would be greatly appreciated ;__;

Thanks so much :D

Policies:

Original characters only. I'd feel bad about making money off of existing, copyrighted characters (and I don't know how legal it is :XD:). However, if your original character is meant to be part of an existing universe (Naruto, Avatar, etc), I don't see a problem with that.

No hentai/overtly-sexual themes -- partial nudity is fine as long as it's artistic or intrinsic to the character (e.g. Angora from The Meek) XD.

Please no deadlines XD. If you need an image done by a specific date, please do not commission it. I can only work on commissions in the order I receive them, and some may take longer than others.

I can only accept Credit/Debit Card or PayPal payments. When you request a commission, I'll need your e-mail address so I can send a PayPal invoice to you -- which looks like this:

Please, DO NOT send me any payment until I let you know that I'm ready to start on your commission. I won't start on commissions until I receive payment, but I also won't ask for payment until I'm ready to start XD. Unfortunately, this has to be done via the honor system -- but you have my personal guarantee that your commission will be done :]

What You'll Receive:

When I'm done with the commission, I'll send you the full image at 300 dpi in JPEG format via e-mail. Some images may be quite large in file size, so I might need to provide a link to where you can download it. If you're currently commissioning an image it might be a good idea to add blueten87@gmail.com to your contacts, so your images don't end up in the Spam folder for strange reasons.

You'll own the full copyright to your commission and can reproduce it, alter it, or print it if you want :)

Just finished setting up the store for Everblue. Chapter 2 is available now, the same print I sold at Sakuracon. Each comic comes with a little Everblue button, and you can get a special version with a sketch inside :].

Hopefully I'll have some posters and other things up eventually as well, once I figure out the best way to ship those XD.

Tumbling

Wed May 11, 2011, 6:18 AM

Edit: OMG, thanks so much for the subscription, anonymous person! X'DD

Anyway, just wanted to let you know I've started a Tumblr. I'll be using it to post up sketches (mostly Everblue-related), rather than using my Livejournal or the Scraps here. Tumblr is so quick and intuitive, giving me a great excuse to do more sketches :D. I've already posted a bunch if you want to take a look :3

Oh, just realized I never did a Sakuracon followup XD. Well, it went great :D. For my first time selling at a convention I wasn't expecting much and I was really nervous, but I think things turned out pretty good. blix-it, Nadda, and sambees were really fun to hang out with (and I'm a total recluse in RL, so I don't say things like that lightly :B), and there were lots of great artists there, plus some cool exhibits (wish I had a chance to have a look around). Thanks to the people who stopped by and picked up a comic! Two of you asked for sketches in the comics and I really appreciate that! :D

Lastly, I might be starting commissions up again soon :B

Sakuracon 2011

Sat Apr 2, 2011, 5:26 AM

Announcement time!

So this month (April 22 - 24) I'll be at Sakuracon, sharing booth 246 with Nadda, the writer of Amya Chronicles. Unlike my table at Kumoricon last year, which I had to cancel due to unpreparedness, I actually have everything in order this time: freshly printed copies of Chapter 2, and a bunch of posters from the gallery here :B.

If any of you are going, I hope I get to see you there :D

The journal header was so much fun XD. But it was also partly a thank you gift to Savannah, who's been just super awesome offering to share the table and helping me out with the posters :]

Anyway, just wanted to let you know that Everblue has a Facebook Page now (because all the cool kids are doing it) :D. Mostly I'm using it now to archive all the old TWC vote incentives so people can see ones they might have missed, but I'll probably be using it to its full potential once I figure out this newfangled Facebook thing :B

Kumoricon (Update)

Fri Sep 3, 2010, 9:47 PM

So, I'm going to be at Kumoricon 2010 (Labor Day Weekend, Sept. 4-6) in Portland Oregon and I'm bringing Everblue with me :B.

I've been put on the waiting list for a table, so I'll have to wait and see how that works out. If there's no room left, I'm hoping that I might be able to share a table with someone -- and pay for my share of course. I've already posted a request for table sharing in the forums, but I'm not holding my breath XD. For now, I know that I'll be hanging out in the Artist Alley with Everblue related things in tow.

My aunt and my sister surprise-printed me out a bunch of stuff to bring with me -- little buttons, t-shirts, and business cards. I'm also hoping to have sample prints of Chapter 2 and maybe even an exclusive mini comic to hand out :]
.

Edit: Low on funds, so I'll have to save those for next time. I had to turn down my table too XD, but I will have exclusive sketches to give away if you find me :]. I'll be wearing a dark blue Everblue shirt and hanging out in the Artist Alley most of the time :B (I'm an average-height/weight guy with glasses, short black hair and light sideburns -- that ought to narrow it down, hur hur)

It's a lesser known con, but it would be awesome to meet anyone from DA who might be going! :D

:la: I've decided to start up commissions!

If you read the previous journal you'd know I'm a little worried about the state of my drawing tablet, and I'm trying to save up money for an Intuos4 so I can keep making art and comics :). Question for People With Wacom Tablets

Sat Jul 10, 2010, 10:08 AM
Edit: Thanks so much for your comments/help! I found a temporary solution to the scratch problem XD. I might be posting another journal on commission info, so stay tuned :]

So, I've had my Intuos3 (6x8) tablet since 2005, I think, and it's been working great. My gallery here wouldn't exist without it. The only trouble I've had with it is that I find myself constantly needing to replace the surface sheet. I keep getting these portions of the sheet where the surface cracks off (like a candy-coating or something :XD:), and they're always in the same place: the spots where I draw the most. It's very distracting and often causes the pen nib to get stuck and ruin a line I'm drawing.

This happened again not even two months after I bought a new surface sheet, and now I found out that Wacom doesn't seem to be selling the surface sheets for my model of the Intuos3 anymore ;____;. Adding on to that, my pen seems to have developed a problem where the nib connects to the inside, causing it to make weird clicking noises when I draw. I'm afraid that I've just had it too long and it's reaching its end.

I don't know what to do, aside from possibly buying an Intuos4... but the medium model is over $300. I know it's not good practice, but I might have to start doing commissions to save up for one while the scratches are still small and the pen still works. If I can't draw properly on my tablet, Everblue and my gallery here will end up on an indefinite hiatus...

Anyway, my question for Wacom tablet owners is: how often have you had to replace the surface sheet? Am I just drawing too hard? Also for people who own the Intuos4, have you found that the surface sheets are sturdier for that model? I know that the Bamboo models don't have replaceable surfaces, but those could be an option for me if the surfaces are more resistant to scratching XD.

Edit: Should have mentioned that I'm running Windows 7 64-bit, so the newer tablets (Intuos4, Bamboo) are a better option for me to avoid driver issues.

The Last Airbender

Wed Jul 7, 2010, 11:18 PM
  • Listening to: Flow Like Water
SPOILER WARNING - SPOILER WARNING - SPOILER WARNING - SPOILER WARNING

I really wanted to like this movie, I really did. Even going in with my expectations lower than when I went to see Prince of Persia, the Avatar fan in me could not let me hate it from the get-go XD.

Before I start to tear it apart, I'd like to mention that it wasn't all terrible. There were a couple things that kept it from being completely unwatchable:

1. Dev Patel as Zuko. He played Zuko in such a way that I could easily imagine his cartoon counterpart doing everything the same way. The way he spoke, emoted, and even moved himself about the scenes was very... Zuko. Excellent casting choice. The scene where Zuko asks a random child to recount the banishment and disgrace of the Fire Lord's son in order to show Iroh why he desired to reclaim his honor was a nice touch. It showed that they were at least willing to expand on ideas from the series in some places.

2. Iroh. Though not quite as jolly as everyone's favorite uncle, Shaun Toub portrayed Iroh as a laid-back, kind and caring father-figure who could also be quite intimidating. No complaints here. The way he showed that he was honored to meet the Avatar while simultaneously regretting the circumstances (capturing him) without explicitly saying so was one of my favorite scenes.

3. The music. The movie's rather average visuals are accompanied and uplifted by an amazing score by James Newton Howard. I liked it so much that I purchased the album before the movie came out.

4. Noah Ringer. This surprised the heck outta me. For a kid with virtually no acting experience, who Shyamalan basically just pulled out of a karate class -- he played Aang pretty well, despite sounding depressed a lot of the time (though I don't think that was his fault). I just wish the director had stopped him a couple times from. Reciting his lines. Like this.

5. "We are now the Gods." I liked that line... Very Zhao.

And then there's the rest of it:

1. The stupid benders. There's a reason why, in the series, most Firebenders didn't need a source of fire in order to bend it... If they constantly needed something on fire in order to use their abilities, they would have been defeated 10 minutes after Sozin's Comet passed by. Earth, Water, and Air benders could all easily extinguish any source of fire without so much as flicking their wrists. Constantly throughout the movie I had to wonder why the water benders, with water everywhere, weren't just splashing it on the Fire Nation's puny little campfires and proceeding to kick their asses. The fire nation came off as a bunch of weaklings and the other benders as incredibly dumb.

To me, in the series it seemed that there were different levels of bending for each nation. The fire nation had the basic fire bending, and then lightning for more experienced masters. Waterbenders had bloodbending, Earthbenders had metal... and the Air Nomads' advanced bending ability was never explored, but I'm sure the writers had something in store for them as well. My point is that the fire nation in the movie is portrayed as the weakest of them all. In the series it's easily understandable why and how they could rise to power, but it just doesn't make sense in the film. Even with a few masters on their side like Iroh who can create fire without a source, it wouldn't be enough against an army of earth kingdom and water tribe warriors who could bend mountains and tidal waves at them.

2. Coherence, plz? The entire first act of the movie is a confusing mess of cuts, jumping from one scene to another with an obviously tacked on exposition from Katara each time. Someone who had never seen the series would be totally lost. I assume this was a side-effect of them cutting so much from the movie (Kiyoshi Warriors, etc) in order to get more time slots at the theater. When cutting scenes compromises the coherence of your movie to this extent... you should probably just leave everything in :|

3. The characters. In the series every character brought something new to the table and expanded on the mythology and world of Avatar. We felt like they were real people with real struggles. We understood why they fought and why they cared about each other. In the movie we get creepy, boring, cardboard cutout representations of characters, and we are literally told that they care about each other... and the filmmakers must have assumed that we would care about them because we're told to.

4. The final insult. In order to further drill into our heads that Katara and Sokka have absolutely nothing resembling a real friendship with Aang, Shyamalan has the two walk away and bow down to him  at the end of the movie. I got the feeling that Aang appreciated Sokka and Katara's friendship in the series because they didn't treat him like the Avatar, they treated him like an equal. They were a family. In the movie they should have stood at his side, helping him to accept the weighty responsibility forced upon him.

:star::star::star-half::star-empty::star-empty:

There's a lot more I could talk about, but I'm just going to finish by saying I'm not too fond of the movie :XD:. And it's not simply because it wasn't enough like the series, or wasn't what I was expecting... It's because most of it was a poorly executed, awkward mess. If by some miracle they make enough money to warrant a sequel, I'm pretty sure Shyamalan won't be given a chance to redeem himself as writer/director. His credibility has been gang-drowned... right alongside Zhao.
